Damoose supports final budget proposal
July 3, 2026

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. John Damoose, R-Harbor Springs, on Friday issued the following statement after the Senate voted to pass the state’s 2026-27 fiscal year budget:

“I do think we could have done better. My colleagues and I were largely left in the dark until the final hours, and that’s no way to set the tone for good faith negotiations as we work to complete such an important financial duty that we all have as lawmakers.

“However, as debate continued through the night, discussions that brought life to some tremendous opportunities for Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula became part of the conversation.

“I’m proud to have worked to secure funding for our schools, local governments, roads, bridges, and most importantly, for my communities back home in the district.

“Included in the budget deal was my legislation to improve safety and security for the Mackinac Bridge, funding to support permanent housing for the Sault Tribe, expanded outdoor recreation within the 37th District, and investments that will offer new educational opportunities for students at Lake Superior State University and Northern Central Michigan College.

“As the night went on, this budget grew stronger and stronger for Northern Michigan, and when paired with reduced spending from last year, a strong focus on education, guaranteeing no new taxes or raids on our savings, I was able to come to the table and offer my support.”
