LANSING, Mich. — Sen. John Damoose on Tuesday afternoon provided a brief update on rising water levels at the Cheboygan Dam.
“I’ve maintained close contact with local officials and first responders, and the situation is being carefully monitored to determine if additional safety measures should be taken,” said Damoose, R-Harbor Springs. “I wanted to provide a brief update and share the best resources for those in the community who might have questions or concerns for their and their families’ safety.”
As of this morning, the water level is 7.68 inches below the top of the dam in Cheboygan, which is more than six inches higher than yesterday. When the water level reaches six inches below the top of the dam, the alert will switch from the green “ready” phase to the yellow “set” stage.
If the water gets within one inch of the top, the red alert phase will be initiated. A red alert means occupants of the affected areas will be asked to leave within a specified time period. According to the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, if an evacuation is ordered, residents will receive a Federal Emergency Management Agency Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) alert on their mobile phones.
“Residents are encouraged to start planning or begin packing necessary items and preparing your family, pets and vehicle for potential departure,” Damoose said. “Remember the 6 P’s: plan, personal items, prescriptions, photographs, pets and papers.”
Damoose also noted there has been some incorrect information being circulated and encouraged residents to contact his office or monitor the following pages:
“As residents prepare for evacuation, be cautious of standing water on roads and be mindful of potential roadblocks that may be in place,” Damoose said. “I’m praying for northern Michigan residents and am available to provide any assistance or updates I am able to provide.
“Please, stay calm and stay safe. Northern Michigan residents have shown their grit, especially in recent years, and we can work together to get through this safely.”
